No-Hitters’ Non-Winners September 16, 2015

Since 1901, Major League Baseball pitchers have thrown 250 no-hitters. However, five of these (2%) were still losing efforts. How is this possible? Because an opponent can score runs without any hits: “In a no-hit game, a batter may still reach base via a walk, an error, a fielder’s choice, a hit by pitch, a passed ball or wild pitch on strike three, or catcher’s interference.” (I don’t know about you, but that starts me imagining scenarios for how I might throw a no-hitter myself.)
