King Abdullah II of Jordan. Knowing that he was a Trekkie gave me hope for his country when he ascended to the throne in 1999. You never know when a foreign leader is just posing for Western media coverage, but this recent profile is encouraging. My favorite part comes while the reporter rides along in the Black Hawk helicopter piloted by the king. The reporter suggests a quick detour to Jerusalem, 30 miles away. “The cousins like to have more warning,” one of the king’s aides says with a smirk. (The “cousins” referring to the Israelis, who share a common ancestor in Abraham.) Jordan is one of the few Muslim nations which recognizes the nation of Israel. We wish the king and his country’s people well.
