Stuff My Sisters Will Like

To Jenny, Katie and Laura, From Their Brother, Victor

An Interesting Atheist March 7, 2013

If Piers Morgan expected to find an accomplice in criticizing the Catholic Church on his show the other night, that’s not what he got out of atheist Penn Jillette. Penn, of the magic duo Penn and Teller, ended up defending Catholic orthodoxy against the self-professed Catholic host’s criticisms. Penn’s defense was imperfect (for instance, only 3 Persons are “divine” and the Pope is not one of them) but even though he doesn’t believe in the Catholic worldview he is willing to be fair towards it.

This episode reminded me of the time that Penn was moved by a Christian man giving him a Gideon Bible after a show. It did not change Penn’s non-belief, but he was clearly grateful that someone would love him in that way.

Say a prayer for him. Someone who cares about the truth and who can be moved by love is a person God can work with. And say a prayer for Piers Morgan while you’re at it.

Penn’s magician associate, Teller, had no comment on the subject.
