Stuff My Sisters Will Like

To Jenny, Katie and Laura, From Their Brother, Victor

The Mormon Glow November 30, 2012

Filed under: Neat,Religion,Science,Stuff — Fr. Victor Feltes @ 8:00 am

Reportedly, Mormons are thought by some to have a glow about them, a radiance of the Holy Spirit. So, two researchers set out to see if non-Mormons could detect it:

“The psychologists began their experiment by cropping head shots of Mormons and non-Mormons and asking undergraduate volunteers whether they could pick out the Mormons. They certainly could-and in just a glance. While random guessing would yield 50 percent accuracy, as in a coin toss, the volunteers accurately identified Mormon men and women 60 percent of the time. (Mormons themselves were only slightly more accurate.)”

My first reaction to this was to consider how other features could be serving as cues: “Maybe we have a stereotype of what Mormons look like and that generalization is not far off. I haven’t met many people from Tanzania, but I think I could pick them out of a room of Americans at least 60% of the time.” Read the article to see what surprizing Mormon physical trait the researchers concluded allowed people to have the power of “Mordar.”

I don’t know about a glow, but i’d be willing to guess I can pick out a Mormon out with better the 50% accuracy if I heard them talk long enough.
