Things you can learn from this map of the ten largest U.S. cities since 1790:

  1. New York City has always been the largest U.S. city (at least since 1790.)
  2. Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania (now a neighborhood of Philadelphia and home to the National Shrine of St. John Neumann) was once the 6th largest city in the United States.
  3. An unforeseen event really shook things up for San Francisco in the early 1900’s.
  4. Equipped with air conditioning, Americans have grown increasingly fond of warm, dry, sunny weather.
