One of the best half-days of my life was a morning spent touring the Gettysburg battlefield. Our fantastic guide griped that Civil War buffs were always boasting to him about how they could have led so much better if they had been in General Lee’s boots. Such prideful Monday morning generaling forgets the fog of war and the failures of ‘best laid plans.’ Ironically, they may have been right. This neat History Channel Gettysburg Simulation implies that just about any decision you choose differently for the South makes the conflict turn out better for them than it did in July of 1863.
